Environmental Management System
We Operate Responsibly

As the leading exhibition and congress organiser in Finland, we want to be responsible and lead the way in addressing environmental issues, too. We take into consideration the burden our operations can cause for the environment and strive to minimise the effects of it.

The first exhibition or conference centre to receive certification

The Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre was the first Finnish exhibition or conference centre to receive ISO 14001 environmental management certification. The certification covers all exhibition and congress operations, including restaurant services and any associated technical services. Our certified environmental management system obliges us to continue developing our operations.

Three primary targets

We have set ourselves three primary targets in terms of the environment:
• reducing the amount of waste
• more careful sorting and efficient further use of waste
• optimisation of energy consumption and promotion of the use of public transport.

Working Toward Less Waste, Via More Efficient Waste Management

Our goal is to reduce the amount of waste per exhibition space sold at the Exhibition & Convention Centre. We are focusing on sorting waste and making sure its further use is efficient.
We have made sorting of waste more efficient at the building and dismantling stages of exhibitions, by providing new, clearly marked Eco Stations and we also an environmental supervisor to circulate through the exhibition area, guiding exhibitors and monitoring operations.

The following materials are sorted for recycling at the Exhibition & Convention Centre: white wastepaper, coloured wastepaper, waste cardboard, organic waste, waste wood, waste glass, plastic waste, metal waste, dry residual waste, and carpeting.

We have also provided our halls, cafés, and other public areas with bins that allow waste to be sorted. We guarantee that further use of the sorted waste is efficient and further processing of it is reliable.
We sort waste efficiently and strive to reduce the number of printouts in the offices, the amount of packaging materials for incoming goods, and the surplus in brochures and other printed products distributed. Around 90% of the office supplies and production materials we purchase are eco-labelled

Saving Energy Aiming to Reduce Consumption of Heat, Electricity, and Water

Our heat, electricity, and water consumption are monitored, with annual assessment, in relation to the exhibition space sold.

We control the energy-efficiency of our premises. We use a timer for heating and cooling our exhibition venues on the basis of the use of the venue and the wishes of our customers. Modern heat recovery systems allow us to achieve a heat recovery level of 60%.

Exhibition halls are cooled only when customers are present, and at the warm time of year we utilise night-time ventilation. In the colder parts of the year, heat loss due to opening of exhibition hall doors is minimised through the use of modern door systems. Our doormen have procedures in place for saving energy.

Our hotel is equipped with water-saving fittings, and all taps in all of the toilets at the Exhibition & Convention Centre are electric, in order to save water. All of the restaurant kitchens too are equipped with energy saving fittings.

The light fittings in the exhibition halls at the Exhibition & Convention Centre are low-energy. Our control room adjusts lighting levels in accordance with usage and with the help of timers. Lighting and electricity in the hotel rooms are operated through the key cards, and lighting in the offices is controlled with motion detection.

Optimising energy consumption was also a consideration in our planning of expansion of the halls. Hall 7 will be heated and cooled with ground-source heating and cooling.

Promoting Public Transport

Our goal is for as many visitors as possible to arrive at the Exhibition & Convention Centre via public transport. We monitor the situation by comparing the annual total of parking fees paid with the number of visitors to our events.

The Exhibition & Convention Centre is conveniently located and easily accessible from all directions. We recommend public transport in all of our communication. We work closely with the agencies responsible for public transport in the Helsinki metropolitan area. There is a designated parking area for charter buses, and groups arriving on them are entitled to a group discount on admission fees
We also expect all of our partners in co-operation to be responsible and committed to our environmental management system.
